Crystal shares her story:
- Early Life & First Allegation: When Crystal was six months old, she began living with the couple who became her legal guardians. She alleges her abuser committed his first abusive acts in a closet while visiting her guardian’s home.
- Forced Isolation: After her guardians divorced, her “Mom” dropped Crystal off at her abuser’s house and moved to South Carolina. This forced her to live with daily sexual abuse, feeling alone and trapped despite others living in the home.
- DCF Failure: In 2007, when Crystal was 12, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) removed her from the home due to the abuser’s criminal charges for allegedly assaulting another child. Despite this, she alleges he continued picking her up from school and raping her.
- Continued Negligence: During this time, the abuser sought formal guardianship, and DCF approved the request, even though the abuser had assault charges and Crystal was pregnant. Crystal gave birth to his daughter in 2008.
- Fighting for Her Daughter: Crystal left her home at age 20. The abuser and his wife retained custody of her daughter. Crystal finally regained custody of her daughter at age 25, after realizing she could contest the custody claims.
Crystal’s account alleges that other adults lived in the home but failed to intervene. She adapted to her circumstances, filling a role dictated by the man who controlled her.

Proving Liability Beyond the Abuser
A sexual abuser is subject to criminal prosecution (a felony under Connecticut’s Penal Codes), but collecting a damage award directly from them can be difficult. As assault is an intentional act, the abuser’s liability insurer might avoid negotiating a claim or paying any judgment.
In a criminal case, the prosecutor must prove guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt.” A civil case sets a lower standard for proof. A plaintiff/victim’s evidence must prove liability based on a preponderance of evidence.
